Horse Meat

Detail from a Fry's Sandwich Chocolate ad from Picture Post, September 16th 1939.

We vegetarians are currently having a good chuckle at the carnivores’ faux indignance at being served dead horse instead of dead cow as if the slaughter industry was previously a paragon of moral virtue.

Praise Allah

A small and strange looking boy dressed in a giant fake moustache, wearing a chef's hat emblazoned with the word 'chef' written in sausages, with an Earthward plummeting aeroplane on his shoulder, advertising a seasoning called Praise Allah.
A work of staggering genius or Dadaist madness? Who can tell?
From Gourmet- The Magazine of Good Living, November 1960.

Which Peas?

In the earlier years of consumerism Which? magazine would inform the public of the comparative merits of such products as paper handkerchiefs, matches, draught excluders, thermometers and geometry sets. And all whilst wearing hats.
These days, one would be lucky to find people dressed as smartly at a wedding, let alone an al fresco pea test.
